Description

This homemade sweet and sour sauce recipe is the perfect mix of tangy and sweet. It’s ready in only 10 minutes and tastes better than any store-bought alternative.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup pineapple juice
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar or sugar alternative (I use coconut sugar)
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari sauce)
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 45 drops (natural) red food coloring (optional)

Instructions

  1. Stir together all of the ingredients, except for the cornstarch, water, and food coloring (if using) in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and water until the cornstarch dissolves.
  3. Pour the cornstarch mixture into the saucepan and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Let the sauce simmer until it thickens.
  4. If using, stir in the red food coloring to give the sauce its traditional red coloring.
  5. Use the sauce immediately or cool and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
