Description
This homemade sweet and sour sauce recipe is the perfect mix of tangy and sweet. It’s ready in only 10 minutes and tastes better than any store-bought alternative.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3/4 cup pineapple juice
- 3/4 cup packed brown sugar or sugar alternative (I use coconut sugar)
- 1/4 cup rice vinegar (or apple cider vinegar)
- 3 tbsp ketchup
- 3 tbsp soy sauce (or tamari sauce)
- 1 tbsp honey
- 1 1/2 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp water
- 4 – 5 drops (natural) red food coloring (optional)
Instructions
-
Stir together all of the ingredients, except for the cornstarch, water, and food coloring (if using) in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil over high heat.
-
In a small bowl, mix together the cornstarch and water until the cornstarch dissolves.
-
Pour the cornstarch mixture into the saucepan and simmer for 2 – 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Let the sauce simmer until it thickens.
-
If using, stir in the red food coloring to give the sauce its traditional red coloring.
-
Use the sauce immediately or cool and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
