slow cooker red wine hot chocolate

You may have read the title of this recipe and thought that it’s too good to be true. Or, like me, when I first heard that slow cooker red wine hot chocolate existed – I thought no way can this actually taste good!

But I am now a believer.

Not only does it taste good – it tastes AMAZING.

This recipe is like cozying up with your favorite glass of red wine while snacking on a creamy chocolate bar. You wouldn’t think that you can combine those two elements successfully, but this recipe has done the impossible.

How Does Slow Cooker Red Wine Hot Chocolate Work?

There’s something that happens as all of the ingredients go into the slow cooker for an hour. They mix and infuse together and the result is perfection.

And YES there is an ENTIRE bottle of wine in this recipe! If you’re making red wine hot chocolate it needs to be all-in. It’s an entire bottle of red wine balanced with chocolate morsels melted with cocoa powder, milk & sugar. Classic.

Maybe you ended up on this recipe because you’re considering making slow cooker hot chocolate. Well this recipe is exactly slow cooker hot chocolate, but before you turn your slow cooker on, you pour in the wine 🙂

Take the plunge. Add the wine. You’ll thank me later! And if you’re making this for a crowd, so will your guests.

What kind of red wine do you use for this?

Any kind of red wine will do but dry red wines bring out the chocolate flavor best! Cabernet or Merlot are good 🙂

Hi! What kind of milk did you use? I’m wondering if almond milk would work?

Hi Amy! I used whole milk! You can use almond milk but it won’t be quite as creamy. And if you’d like a closer dairy free alternative I’d try oat milk 🙂

This recipe sounds amazing! Thinking about making this for a girls night next weekend but I’m wondering does the alcohol burn off in the slow cooker?

The alcohol doesn’t burn off because the slow cooker never gets hot enough for that to happen! Just hot enough for all the flavors to mix together 🙂
