easy homemade apple pie

This is an easy, classic homemade apple pie recipe. It’s made with tasty Granny Smith apples, and a hint of cinnamon & nutmeg (so good)!

? How to Make Homemade Apple Pie from Scratch:

Step 1:

Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Peel, slice and core the apples.

Step 2:

Melt the butter in a saucepan and then stir in flour. Add water, white sugar and brown sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the temperature and let simmer to thicken. Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon extract.

Step 3:

Place the bottom crust in your pie dish. Fill the crust with apples, mounding them slightly in the middle of the dish.

Step 4:

Pour the mixture from the saucepan over the apples, distributing it as evenly as possible.

Step 5:

Place a top crust on the pie. Place either a lattice crust or a full crust with air vent holes cut in it.

Step 6:

Bake for 15 minutes in the oven. Reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 35 – 45 minutes, until apples are soft and crust is golden brown.

? What kind of apples are best for apple pie?

Granny Smith apples are best! They have a strong flavor that stays tasting fresh even when baked. Or, if you can’t find Granny Smith apples try Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious. The flavor may be milder or sweeter; but it will still be tasty.

?‍? How to Make a Lattice Top for a Pie Crust:

Here’s a step by step walkthrough of how to make a lattice pie crust:

  1. Lay out your pie crust. Cut it into 1/2″ or 3/4″ strips. Cut it using a knife or pizza wheel.
  2. Lay all of the strips on your pie. Weave the strips in an alternating pattern. It helps if you fold back half of the strips to start (for a visual see here).
  3. Weave the rest of your strips.
  4. Press the edges of the strips into the pie crust to create a seal.
