About The Recipe

This recipe is essentially french toast that you bake in your oven. Here’s how it works: you cube french bread (or sourdough bread) and then pour an egg mixture over it. When baked in the oven, the casserole takes on the same flavor and consistency of French toast!

I like making this recipe more than regular French toast because there’s less time spent in the kitchen. Instead of watching your toast as it cooks, you simply add all of the ingredients to your casserole dish and bake it in the oven.

The Brown Sugar Drizzle

The best part of this recipe is the topping! It’s a combination of butter, brown sugar and cinnamon. All melted together and then drizzled over the top of your casserole.

That’s what makes this recipe a level up from regular French toast!

Ingredients for Pecan French Toast Casserole:

The full recipe is at the bottom of this page, but here’s a quick breakdown of what you’ll need for this recipe:

For the casserole:

  • 10 cups of cubed French bread about 1 large loaf (or sourdough or ciabatta bread)
  • 6 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup chopped pecans – more?

For the topping:

  • 5 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 tbsp light brown sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp ground cinnamon

How to Make Pecan French Toast Casserole

Step 1:

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Cube your bread into 1” cubes (leave the crust on).

Step 2:

Grease a 9 x 13” casserole dish. Place half of the bread cubes in a layer on the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle half of the pecans over the bread.

Step 3:

Add the remaining bread in a second layer and sprinkle on the remaining pecans. Try to lay your bread cubes in an even layer so that they will bake evenly.

Step 4:

In a small bowl, mix together the custard: whisk together the eggs and then whisk in the milk, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg and salt. Pour the mixture over the bread, trying to get some over all of the bread cubes.

Step 5:

In another small bowl, mix together the butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon to create the topping. Drizzle the mixture over the bread.

Step 6:

Bake the casserole in the oven for 30 – 35 minutes, until the top of the casserole is brown with bits that are dark brown. Optionally, serve with powdered sugar and maple syrup.
