What You Really Need for a Baby in a Small Space

When we moved into our 600 sqft cabin I barely believed that we would be able to fit our things into the space – let alone all the baby things that we would need to buy!

But what we discovered is that babies don’t need as much as we thought they did. Especially for the first 6 months, there are plenty of baby products on the market that have as small footprint.

What do you REALLY need for a baby in a small space?

You might find the below suggestions surprising. I know when I came across some of these products I thought ‘would that really work?!’ But these are all the products that we love and use daily.

And I am SO THANKFUL for all the space they’ve saved 🙂

Here’s what you really need for a baby in a small space. This is focusing on the essentials for baby’s first 6 months.

1. Collapsible Bath Tub

Stokke Flexi Bath with Heat Sensitive Plug

This tub has been a lifesaver for us! It’s been so easy to use and it folds up for easy storage. When our baby is ready for a bath we use this on our countertop or the floor of the shower. Great solution if you don’t have a tub & this is a product that will grow with your baby (you can use it for kids up to 3 – 4 years old)

2. Car Seat & Stroller

Choosing a car seat & stroller is one of the trickiest decisions when picking out baby items. There’s so many options. And they all take up so much space. This car seat & stroller combo is awesome because they combine together in one small-footprint foldable set:

3. Mini Crib

DaVinci Annabelle 2-in-1 Mini Crib and Twin Bed

Mini cribs were one of the ‘compact’ baby items that I was initially skeptical about. I had never heard of these before. BUT – now I recommend them to everyone. Mini Cribs are slightly smaller than regular size cribs but still have plenty of room for baby. The inches that they save are precious! Note: make sure to also buy mini crib sized sheets.

4. Pack ‘n Play Playard

Graco Pack ‘n Play Playard with Reversible Napper and Changer

A pack ‘n play is great to have if you plan for your baby to sleep anywhere but your own home during his or her first few months. We used our for a quick trip and when we went to visit relatives.

If you buy a combo pack ‘n play like this one you can also use the bassinet while baby is tiny. AND it even comes with a removable changing station.

5. Halo Bassinest Swivel Sleeper Bassinet

HALO Bassinest Swivel Sleeper Bassinet

If you want to purchase a bassinet for baby’s first months, this is the most space efficient one I’ve seen. It’s swivel function allows it to be stored over your bed, which is especially convenient for night feedings.

An added bonus is the mesh on the sides of the bassinet, which makes it easy to keep an eye on baby while he/she is inside.

6. Baby Bouncer

Bright Starts Playful Pinwheels Bouncer

A baby bouncer is one item that you’ll thank yourself for buying. We skipped some of the ‘typical’ other baby entertainers: play gyms, play mats, etc. But a baby bouncer was a must-have to keep baby happy.

There are many compact baby bouncers on the market! Pick a price range that works for you & research the ones that fit.

7. Four in One High Chair

Evenflo 4-in-1 Eat & Grow Convertible High Chair

Some babies will be eating solid foods by the time they turn 6 months, which is why I’ve included a high chair on this list. You can wait to buy a high chair until you need it (we did this).

If you’re pressed for space, this is the high chair you’ll want to get. It’s:

*Lightweight, easy to move from place to place
*3 in 1: it turns into a short high chair or a chair + table combo for when baby gets older

Especially for the price, this high chair is a must-have.

You’ll probably also accumulate toys, clothes, and plenty of other items during baby’s first few months. But making space-saving decisions about some of the big items listed here will go a long way.
